Angie is a passionate Colombian woman who moved to Canada in April of 2010 with her husband looking for better opportunities for themselves and their daughter. Since moving to Canada, Angie has built a successful career in the non-profit sector.
In Colombia, Angie held roles working towards the prevention of sexual abuse, commercial sexual exploitation and domestic violence with families and individuals. When Angie arrived in Canada, her heart led her to Bissell Centre, where she spent nearly 7 years supporting individuals to find and sustain housing, using the Housing First philosophy. In November of 2018 Angie won the Collaboration Award at Bissell Centre because she was one of the biggest cheerleaders in the agency, was instrumental in enhancing collaboration between teams, and was highly passionate about ending homelessness in Edmonton.
Angie has taught the Ready to Rent program at Bissell Centre for the last 2 years. This program teaches people experiencing homelessness the skills to live independently and empowers them with the tools to be self-advocates. Through this program, she has helped many individuals experiencing homelessness to overcome barriers to find housing. Her colleagues enjoy commenting about how she always starts her days with a phrase she learned from her mentor: “Today is a beautiful day for improving lives”.
Angie lives in Edmonton with her husband, John, and 2 kids, Angela (9 years) and Alejandro (3 years). She loves cooking Colombian food, dancing, singing and spending time with her family. She is excited to bring her passion and skills to Selections and share the importance of celebrating small successes, being happy and never forgetting to laugh.
