Selections is the first Edmonton Agency to evolve from a sheltered workshop to a totally community based service model. The groundwork of Selections was laid in the form of South Edmonton Bottle Depot in March 1979. This was a vocational training program sponsored by Edmonton Separate School Board.

The program focused on providing short-term training in a work environment for young adults with a developmental disability. The bottle depot provided an opportunity for individuals to learn job related skills and habits, as well as, gain increased self-confidence from learning and performing regular job duties. Once individuals were competent in job skills, they were referred to various job placement agencies throughout the city.

Over time, it was realized that greater job opportunities for individuals would exist within the community as opposed to the structure of the Bottle Depot. This transition offered more possibilities for individualized job development and greater community inclusion.

Aligning with these principles, 1989 marked the year that Selections Career Support Services was founded.
